Our beloved Carey Jane Felt passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, August 17, 2026. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, dear friend, and community member who brought joy and laughter to everyone around her.

Carey was born on September 24, 1953, in Flushing, Michigan to LeRoy and Phyllis Shreve. She always got a kick out of starting the long, drawn-out version of her “whole life story” to anyone she could rope into listening until they realized she was just having fun with them.

With her outgoing personality and contagious optimism, Carey made friends everywhere she went. She had a gift for making those around her feel welcome and comfortable, and she was a living embodiment of compassion, inclusivity, and generosity to both friends and strangers. She deeply believed in showing kindness and acceptance to everyone, regardless of background or status.

As a dedicated paraprofessional, Carey found joy and purpose in working with her students and colleagues. She was also an active member of the recovery community and touched many lives by sharing her own story and supporting others. She could always offer a smile and encouraging words to anyone having a hard day.

As a friend and family member, Carey was effusive in her love and praise. She often expressed her care by sending beautiful handmade cards in envelopes decorated with her signature calligraphy script and intricate doodles of leaves and hearts. An avid reader and journaler, she had a way with words and enjoyed writing poems and heartfelt letters. She also loved long walks, spending time in nature, and participating in lively, competitive card games with her friends and family. She will always be remembered for her whole-hearted laugh, playful banter, and meaningful reminder of “don’t sweat the small stuff.”

She is survived and dearly missed by her daughters, Shannon Felt and Allison Cozart; her granddaughter Maddison Cozart; her son-in-law Nick Cozart; her brother and sister-in-law, Jon and Kathleen Shreve, along with her nephew and niece, Jacob Shreve and Emma Teggerdine, their children, her dear friend, Sherri Strand, and many other beloved family members and friends.

In Carey’s honor, a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Van Buren Conference Center, 490 S. Paw Paw Street, Lawrence, Michigan 49064. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made here to support her family with end-of-life expenses.
