F. Joan (Crady) Bogart

100 years, eight months, and 23 days – it was a life well-lived, and she was well-loved by family and friends. F. Joan (Crady) Bogart left us on November 10, 2025. She was feisty to the end.

Joan, who was affectionately known as “Joanie” was born to William P. Crady and Florence (Pelletier) Crady in Mantua, Ohio. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother David, and her husband Joseph W. Bogart.

She is survived by children, Joseph Jr. (partner Ann-Marie Foley-Padilla), Maria Dacoba (Emilio), David (Erin) Bogart, and Jeannine Bogart (Robert Silis); grandchildren Emma, Joseph III, and Maggie Bogart, Isabella Dacoba, and Jameson and JJ Bogart. Joan also leaves behind her sister-in-law Roseanne Dowsett, and niece Claire Bogart, who was a dedicated caretaker to both Joan and Joe ensuring that they were able to stay in their home during the past several years.

Growing up in Mantua, Joan fondly remembered going with her father to pick bunches of watercress that were sold to various markets and helped cover her tuition costs at Miami University, in Ohio. During her college years, Joan found a way to serve her country on the home front during World War II: she was one of the United States’ famed Rosie the Riveters. Joan, because of her diminutive size was the one of the few “Rosies” who was able to fit into the small areas of various airplanes and hold the rivet gun.

Upon graduation from college with a degree in Nutrition and Dietary Science, Joan worked as a dietitian. She related several stories from her days working in Virginia, including the various senior military officials to whom she had served meals, including General Dwight Eisenhower. Also, one of her favorite jobs was working as a dietitian at Marshall Field’s in Chicago, where she always jokingly claims she spent more than she made.

Fate intervened when her career took her to Saga Foods (now Sodexo) in South Bend, Indiana. While employed at Saint Mary’s College, she met her future husband, Joe Bogart. He also worked for Saga overseeing the food service for Saint Mary’s College and University of Notre Dame.

Joe and Joan were married on December 30, 1960, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in the Cathedral at Notre Dame. They were married for 62 years. They both were long time Notre Dame fans, never missing a tailgate or home game.

Joan was a stay-at-home mom to Joe Jr., Maria, David, and Jeannine during their childhood years. Once they were in school Joan could further her arts and crafts projects, attend antique auctions, and bring home interesting finds.

Joan was a fabulous gourmet cook and hosted numerous gatherings at their home including holiday parties, neighborhood gatherings, and wedding showers.

Once the children departed from home, Joan opened an antique and collectible store, The Bogart Collection. Soon, Joe joined her in shopping for antiques and collectibles for the store, and they also traveled throughout Michigan and the Midwest participating in antique shows.

Joan spent her retirement years traveling the world with her dear friend Beverly, and honed her skills, becoming a crafter extraordinaire. She was known for her decoupaged purses, and for making beautiful cards bringing together a mix of multi-media items that could include paper, fabric, accent embellishments, and art that she had hand-colored, from her large rubber stamp collection.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial mass held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, 421 Monroe Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49006, so that all family members can attend. She will be laid to rest, next to Joe, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.
