James Owen Salter, 74, of Kalamazoo, passed away peacefully after a hard-fought battle with cancer on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at his home in Kalamazoo.
He was born January 6, 1951, in New Bern, North Carolina, the son of John Neal Salter Sr. and Martha (Epperson) Salter.
Jim served his county in the Infantry Combat Division of the Army during the Vietnam War. After his time in the service, he met his wife, Linda in North Carolina and they were married on October 20, 1978. She preceded him in death in 2023. Jim and Linda moved to Michigan where Jim took on the father role to Linda's children.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being in nature. He took great pride in his meticulous yard and feeding the birds. He loved having his family around and traveling. Jim and Linda loved going camping in their fifth wheel trailer to their annual summer spot each year. Most recently, Jim enjoyed his trips to the casino and relaxing at home with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Jaclyn Salter; stepdaughter, Robin Gerlofs; stepson, Richard Ketelaar; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews, and siblings, Neal (Carolyn) Salter, Rick (Leigh) Salter, Elaine Williams, Cheryl Tripp and Ann (Bob) Williams.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation will take place. In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be no public services at this time. Jim and Linda will be laid to rest at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
