Laverne Walter Masten, 85, of Paw Paw, passed away Friday, May 8, 2026, at Maple Lake Assisted Living in Paw Paw. Vern was born August 21, 1940, at home in Mattawan, the son of Margie Grant Masten and Marie Elizabeth (Geisel) Masten.
Vern proudly served his country in the Marine Corps. He continued a career with the Marines totaling 26 years. He carried a strong sense of dedication and resilience throughout his life. Following his military career, Vern went on to work for the United States Post Office. He took great pride in gardening and enjoyed operating his roadside produce stand at his home in Paw Paw, Masten Produce. Vern had an appreciation for the past and enjoyed watching old TV shows, especially Westerns. He also loved a good book and crossword puzzle. He was a longtime active member of the American Legion McGowen - Johnson Post 68 Paw Paw. Vern was dedicated to the legion, always lending a helping hand.
He is survived by his five sisters, Kathleen (John) Thrasher, Linda Hunt, Terry (John) Brannum, Judy Masten and Sharon Masten; one brother, Norman (Janet) Masten; along with many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and cousins. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Carol Frank, Ethel Masten, Joan DeCrick and Bonnie Grewett, brothers; Darrell Masten and Delbert Masten.
Family and friends are invited to visit Friday, May 15, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, 502 West Michigan Ave., Paw Paw. Funeral services will commence at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Almena Cemetery.
