LaVerne Smith Stevenson

LaVerne Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted servant of God, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, at the age of 68. Born on January 24, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, LaVerne was the cherished daughter of the late Virgin Bailey and James Joseph Smith. Her life was a testament to her unwavering faith, her dedication to her family, and her exceptional talents in both her professional and personal endeavors.

From a young age, LaVerne's musical talents shone brightly. She played the piano, drums, and sang, often performing at churches throughout Detroit alongside Reverend Edith Johnson. Her passion for music was matched by her deep commitment to her faith, leading her to serve as an Evangelist at Bethel on Mack and Gratiot. Her sermon "In Each Life Some Rain Must Fall" touched the hearts of many, reflecting her profound wisdom and empathy.

LaVerne's academic journey was equally impressive. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from Michigan State University and pursued further studies at Wayne State University. Her exceptional academic achievements, including maintaining a 4.0 GPA, paved the way for a successful career in nursing and later as a Physician's Assistant. Her contributions to patient care and her ability to develop effective treatment plans left a lasting impact on the community.

A devoted member of Perfecting Church under Pastor Marvin Winans, LaVerne found joy in working with the children's choir, nurturing young talents with her characteristic warmth and encouragement. Her intelligence and creativity were matched by her ability to transform a room with her smile, spreading love and compassion wherever she went.

LaVerne was also a loving mother to her daughter, Shatina Stevenson, and a doting grandmother to Dittrich Stevenson and two other cherished grandchildren. Her family was the center of her life, and she found immense joy in their company.

She is predeceased by her parents, Virgin Bailey and James Joseph Smith, and her siblings, including her sister Marlene Smith, Leonard Smith, JJ Smith, and Chanie Mae Magee-Williams, as well as Reverend Edith Johnson and others on her father's side. LaVerne's memory will forever be cherished by her surviving family and a host of other relatives who were blessed by her presence.

A service celebrating LaVerne's life will be held on September 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Grace Temple, located at 23500 W. Seven Mile Road, Detroit, MI 48219. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in LaVerne's honor to the Alzheimer's Research Association, reflecting her enduring commitment to helping others.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to PACE, the Village of Redford, Bronson Hospital, and White Oaks in Paw Paw, MI, for their compassionate care and support during LaVerne's final days.

LaVerne Smith's legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her spirit will remain a guiding light in the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
