Margaret "Peggy" LaRue Schonwald

Margaret “Peggy” Schonwald of Kalamazoo Michigan passed away peacefully May 30, 2025. Born November 3, 1937.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Douglas Schonwald; parents Herbert and Veta McGrew; brother Richard McGrew; and sister Diane McGrew Harless.

She is survived by her children Steve Woodward (Manivanh), Chuck Woodward, Beth Hoburg (Carl), and Vickie Atwood-Romine (Bill); Doug’s children Natalie Taylor-Davis (Terry) and Debbie Hansen; grandchildren Noel, Adam, Peter, Shelby and Taylor; great-grandchildren Hazel and Asher; and brothers John and Stan McGrew.

Peggy had many fond memories of her 20 plus years working for the Paw Paw Medical group. She and Doug became avid travelers in their retirement with a long-desired trip to Europe in 2000.

After the passing of her husband, she became a snowbird and spent her winters in Alabama with Vickie and her family. Peggy’s ability to have a conversation with anyone she met was her most glorious asset, turning any stranger into an acquaintance and many into friends; she had numerous in Michigan and added more in the south during her snowbird years.

Peggy was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68 in Paw Paw. She served as President for many years along with several other positions. She was also a VFW Auxiliary and Fraternal Order of Eagles member.

Peggy was an avid quilter and excellent with crochet. The entire family, as well as many friends, are blessed with beautiful items she made for them over the years. Additionally, she loved to dance, listen to music, and read.

A private service with family only will be held at a later date.
