Ruth Louise Westcott, 73, of Paw Paw, passed away Monday, August 7, 2023, at her home.
She was born November 2, 1949, in Paw Paw, the daughter of the late Francis Dorstewitz and Eleanore (Schmidt) Dorstewitz.
Ruth will be remembered as a lady with great artistic flair. She was very talented with embroidery and quilting and enjoyed showcasing her work. Her true passion was in gardening. She was known as an expert gardener especially with her flower bed designs. She taught others the art of gardening at her master gardener class in Kalamazoo. Ruth was also involved in many clubs and organizations. She participated in the Women's Club in Gobles and was a representative for the Paw Paw Social Club. Along with gardening and needlework, Ruth also enjoyed hunting for beach glass. One time, she had a hard time boarding a cruise ship because she had too much beach glass on her! She particularly liked green glass and uranium glass otherwise known as Vaseline glass. She traveled to several antique shows and flea markets in search of these treasures, often with her late friend Lauren. She always kept a black light on her in order to verify if the glass she found was authentic. She loved being outside, walking the shoreline of the beach and going for cruises in the Caribbean.
She was set up on a blind date with her husband Jim. Their first date was Fricanos and they sat at the "table in the corner". On August 23, 1997, in Bois Blanc Island, she married her blind date, James "Jim" Westcott who survives. Ruth and Jim loved traveling to Boise Blanc Island and could see the Mackinac Bridge from their cabin.
She is also survived by her four daughters, Jennifer Angel, Susan (Christopher) Best, Shari Smith and Cindy (Kelli) Rumry; two sons, Corey (Chrissy) Angel and Daniel (Schuyler) Westcott; sisters, Mary (Bob) Cochrane and Ellen Stephenson.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents.
