Shirley Compall (née Geiser) passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026, at the age of 86.

She was born on December 4, 1939, in Chicago, the daughter of James and Miranda (Leitner) Geiser.

Shirley graduated from St. Scholastica High School in Chicago and married her high school sweetheart, John Compall Sr., in 1959 and together they raised four children in the Edgebrook neighborhood of Chicago, where she made her home for most of her life. She spent twenty years working at Marshall Field’s, where she built friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Shirley moved to Mattawan, Michigan, in 2019 to be closer to her daughters. Above all else, family was the center of her world. She adored her grandchildren and together they shared many laughs. She was always the fun grandma, and they affectionately knew her as “Gramscracker”, a name she wore with pride. She had a keen intellect and a quick wit, and her sense of humor made her a joy to be around, always ready to make the people she loved laugh.

Shirley is survived by her four children, Catherine Catino (Frank), Tim Compall (Jennifer), John Compall Jr. (Caroline), Allyson McCulley (Travis); grandchildren, Kelly Miller (Jonathan), Katelyn Catino, Courtney Tooker (Josh), Nic Compall, Benjamin Compall, Cameron Compall, Christine Compall, Molly Lohroff (Nolan), Matthew Ostrander, Katherine Compall, and Andrew Compall; and great grandchildren, Ethan and Madeline Miller.

She was preceded in passing by her parents, her husband John Compall Sr., and her sister Joan McDonough.

A private family gathering to remember Shirley will be held in Chicago in late August.
