Sophie passed away peacefully Friday morning, April 8, 2011 at her home. Sophie was born September 23, 1924 in Bush, IL, the son of the late Michael and Ernesta (Ozanich) Stimac. Sophie was a member of St. John Bosco Parrish in Mattawan for many years and a member of St. Rita's Guild. Sophie loved to travel and enjoyed cooking and growing her favorite flowers, the African violet. Sophie also enjoyed being with her husband for the many Knights of Columbus activities. On August 9, 1952 in Detroit, Sophie was united in marriage to Stephen Tomac who survives. Also surviving are a son, Stephen Michael (Melody) Tomac, Jr. of Kalamazoo; a daughter, Mary Ellen (John) Tomac-Scholari of Chelsea, MI; 2 grandchildren, Nathan Salisbury and Sean Tomac; a brother, Thomas Stimac of Royal Oak; as well as many nieces and nephews. Sophie was preceded in death by 4 sister; Eva Shafran, Mary Gauvreau, Donna Battle and Julia Roper; and one brother, Clement Stimac. Family will receive friends on Sunday 2-4 and Monday 5-7 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw where a vigil service will be held Monday evening at 7 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church, Mattawan. A luncheon will follow the Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society or Hospice of Southwest Michigan.
